Nesbitt welcomes Chancellor’s Budget announcement of funding for Warrington Peace Centre
Ulster Unionist Party Leader Mike Nesbitt MLA has warmly welcomed today’s announcement by the Chancellor of the Exchequer that the Government will provide funding for the Warrington Peace Centre, run by Colin Parry.
Mr Nesbitt said;
“I am particularly pleased at the Chancellor’s announcement in his Budget speech regarding the Warrington Peace Centre because I raised this very issue with the Prime Minister just three weeks ago.
“On 26 February I wrote to the Prime Minister to ask him to reconsider his position regarding the request for financial help for Colin Parry and the Warrington Peace Centre and to urge him to find the funding to keep this service alive.
“They were seeking £150,000 to fund the continuation of an essential service for victims and survivors of the Northern Ireland Troubles who are resident in Great Britain, and in my opinion it was little short of shameful that they were reduced to virtually begging for funding.
“The services under threat at the Centre are the very ones that are essential for victims traumatised by news such as the On The Run letters that allowed a prime suspect in the Hyde Park atrocity to escape the normal legal processes.
“While we await the detail, the Chancellor’s announcement today is a sign that the Government is at least listening, is good news for victims and survivors and will be warmly welcomed by all those who care about victims and their welfare.”
