My Former Life – Launch Coming Soon

May 5, 2015 | Nick Taylor

My Former Life is a new multimedia education resource to be launched on Thursday 21st May at the Peace Centre in Warrington.

The project brings together four former extremists who have united alongside the Tim Parry Johnathan Ball Foundation for Peace to present their stories to help counter violent extremism.

My Former Life is a film and education resource that explores the motivations these people had to become involved in violent conflict, the consequences of their actions and their departure from the group that brought them to the brink.

Crucially, the film also explores their lives after hate.

Through this resource, we are taken through a journey of understanding and learning about the causes and effects of violent extremism. Ultimately, the heroic and ideologically driven stories perpetrated by violent extremists is undermined by this powerful film that shows that violence and their chosen group didn’t solve anything….

Aimed primarily at 14-19 year olds, this resource will help transform conversations in the classroom and youth groups alike around the causes and effects of extremism. Accompanied by a tailored workshop, the documentary film is launched at a time when schools and colleges are seeking new and innovative ways to engage young people around this challenging topic. Importantly, this product can help schools to fulfil their obligations to deliver to the new Prevent Duty set out in the Counter Terrorsim and Security Bill.

Joining us at the launch will be those whose stories are told through the film; a former recruiter for an Islamist group; a former white supremacist; a former Irish Republican and a former jihadi fighter. These four ‘formers’ will be speaking at the event providing a rare opportunity for the audience to hear, first hand, about their experiences and motivations to share their stories.

The launch will take place at the Tim Parry Johnathan Ball Peace Centre, Warrington, on Thursday 21st May.  This event is invitation only.  However, please contact Anna Connelly if you would like to register an interest in attending at anna.connelly@foundation4peace.org or on 01925 581246.  THIS EVENT IS NOW SOLD OUT
